"Breaking Wave"

Entirely built of reclaimed drift lumber collected from west coast beaches it called attention to ocean pollution from wood waste caused by the sawmill industry.

The frame and truss modules were prefabricated in Squamish, BC, and erected onsite Black Rock Nevada August 22 to 25 2012, incorporating about 1,500 pieces of wood. A core team of five artists including Ron Simmer created and installed this all wood sculpture at Burning Man and burned it midnight of August 29 to an enthusiastic crowd of several thousand people.


Dimensions: 16ft high x 20 long x 10 wide.
Weight: Approx 2 tons.
Budget: $11,000, self-funded.

Burning Man honoraria project. Incorporated a chandelier including four mannequins, several hundred addressable LEDs, and programmed strobes performing rapid colour changes at night.

In the theme of interactive fire art, BurnerBall happens in unsanctioned and unregulated gatherings of Burning Man enthusiasts. It is tetherball played with tennis racquets and flaming kerosene-soaked toilet rolls. Two participants flail at the burning tethered missile protected by hockey helmets, leather gloves, and non-flammable clothing.

So far the only damage has been a little scorched hair. It is wheelchair accessible.

In the theme of interactive fire art, BurnerBall happens in unsanctioned and unregulated gatherings of Burning Man enthusiasts. It is tetherball played with tennis racquets and flaming kerosene-soaked toilet rolls. Two participants flail at the burning tethered missile protected by hockey helmets, leather gloves, and non-flammable clothing.

So far the only damage has been a little scorched hair. It is wheelchair accessible.

In 2013, Ron Simmer created three 10 metre x 2 metre free-standing hammocks made of discarded fishing net and timber. These were transported to Burning Man, and placed at Reverbia Camp, complete with LED light arrays. Designed as communal relaxation stations, they were also installed at local BC Burning Man events "Burn in the Forest" and "Otherworld" for several years.

This was a four-person teeter-totter equipped with an accelerometer controlled Arduino computer that produces rolling light and sound effects when players push it up and down. Shown at several local Burning Man events. Now decommissioned.
